Dolby Atmos Mixing and Mastering

After I place my order, what will the working process look like? faq accordion icon

The working process will be similar to getting a regular stereo version. We make a stereo mix, you listen to it and suggest edits if needed. After confirming the stereo version, we make a Dolby Atmos Mix.

How can I listen to the Dolby Atmos file? faq accordion icon

We provide you with a binaural file for listening with headphones. This is the best way for you to check out how your Dolby Atmos mix sounds if you don’t have access to a speaker set-up 5.1 or 7.1.4. If systems like 5.1, 7.1.4 are available to you, we can provide a downmix for listening in these formats.

What files will I receive if I order a Dolby Atmos mix? faq accordion icon

You will receive 2 files for distribution. A stereo version wav file, and a Dolby Atmos ADM BWF file.

What is the difference between a stereo mix and a Dolby Atmos mix? faq accordion icon

Dolby Atmos is a completely different format, it’s a 3D surround sound that can be played on any speaker set-up or headphones. It creates an amazing illusion of the listener being placed in the center of your music, and the listening experience will be really unforgettable. Many top artists now choose to release songs in Dolby Atmos, and some musicians are even writing pieces especially for Dolby Atmos format. Read more about it on our Dolby Atmos mixing page.

What is a binaural mix? faq accordion icon

Binaural audio is an immersive 2-track mix that can be listened to using headphones or earbuds. It reproduces the way we hear the sound with our ears in the real world, that is why it creates the illusion of space and sounds coming from different directions. For Dolby Atmos, it creates a similar sound in your ears as if you would listen to a Dolby Atmos mix using a proper 3D speaker set-up. Binaural mixes are created directly from the Dolby Atmos mix.

What format is Dolby Atmos? faq accordion icon

Dolby Laboratories developed an object-based and channel-based hybrid sound format. It is capable of assigning sounds to specific speakers, it also allows to pan sound objects in space around the listener. All this information is encoded in the ADM BWF (Audio Descriptive Model Broadcast WAV Format) file, you will receive this type of file ready for distribution when you order a Dolby Atmos mix from us.

I already have my stereo master distributed and I would like to order only a Dolby Atmos mix, can I do it? faq accordion icon

Yes, you can order a Dolby Atmos mix. The work will be similar to a normal Dolby Atmos mix creation, you will send us your multitrack and receive a Dolby Atmos file for distribution.

Can I make a song in Dolby Atmos from my stereo master record? faq accordion icon

A Dolby Atmos file can be created from your stereo record with some illusion of immersive audio, but to create a perfect 3D song, we will need to use your initially recorded multitrack for the song.

How many speakers do I need to listen to Dolby Atmos? faq accordion icon

The bare minimum for Dolby Atmos is a 5.1 system. This means you have five speakers around the room, one subwoofer.

However, you can listen to a song in Dolby Atmos using any number of speakers or with headphones, you just need to make sure that your device supports Dolby Atmos

Music Editing is when we replace some samples (kick, snare, bass, hats, etc) to increase the overall quality of sound. Also we are doing time alignment of instruments such as guitars and drums.

What is the Mastering for iTunes and Mastering for Spotify? faq accordion icon

Mastering for Spotify- mastering according to the requirements of Spotify. Mostly it’s about volume. It helps your track to sound better on Spotify, because a regular master can be over compressed in some cases for this platform.
Apple Digital Masters – they had a different format – AAC, which requires a different headroom and approach. This format provides the best audio quality to the customers. This add on is not applicable for regular iTunes release. Choose this option if you want to release your music with the Apple Digital Masters badge. Also the Apple Digital Masters file can’t be created in a simple mastering house. You need to master it at an Apple Official Mastering house.
We’re happy to say that Major Mixing is an Apple Certified Mastering House!
